  • Paul Carruthers Gender Plus

    Paul Carruthers [he/him]

    Consultant Clinician

    Paul Carruthers is Nurse Consultant at our associated endocrine clinic.

    Paul Carruthers has worked as a clinical nurse specialist in NHS paediatric services for approximately 18 years. Since 2015 he has been a key member of the NHS’ GIDS Endocrine team- leading the nursing team, co-working with mental health colleagues as part of multidisciplinary working, conducting assessments, liaising with primary care provides, as well as overseeing prescribing of gender hormone treatments.

    More recently Paul Carruthers has been the paediatric endocrinology representative on the NHS England committee for the development of the National Gender Identity Development Service. His clinical work involving gender diverse young people has been recognised in an NHS award for outstanding care along with an award recognising the innovation his leadership brought to the service whilst designing the endocrine nurse led pathway.

    Paul Carruthers brings his wealth of clinical experience, service innovation, leadership and management skills to his new role as Nurse Consultant. He will lead our associated endocrine pathway with a focus on ensuring an integrated holistic multidisciplinary pathway of care for young people.

    Paul Carruthers is a member (and former council member) of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS) as well as a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

    Paul Carruthers began his work with the Gender Plus Hormone Clinic team in the UK in September 2023. He began his clinical work post-CQC registration in January 2024. He attends regular MDT meetings with the his medical and psycho-social colleagues to review and monitor the holistic care of each of his patients.

  • Stacey Dover

    Stacey Dover [she/her]

    Hormone Clinic Patient Coordinator

    Stacey has been working in healthcare for the best part of 20 years in various settings, from laser eye clinics, to private dentistry, GP practices and children’s cardiology. For the last 7 years she has worked for the Gender Identity Development Service’s northern endocrine clinic as their MDT coordinator. This is a role that Stacey is very passionate about and she brings this passion with her to the Gender Plus Hormone Clinic.

    Outside of work, Stacey is a very family orientated person, who enjoys eating out and socialising with her family whenever possible. She is also mad about cats!

  • Tomás Ahern

    Dr Tomás Ahern [he/him]

    Consultant Clinician

    Dr Tomás Ahern is a Consultant Endocrinologist registered in Ireland with the Medical Council (123720)

    Dr Ahern completed endocrinology training in Manchester after finishing specialist training at St Columcille's Hospital Loughlinstown and at Manchester Royal Infirmary in the UK. He took up his present appointment as Consultant Endocrinologist in the Louth Hospitals in 2016. Prior to this, he worked as a Consultant in Endocrinology at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. In his current role, he is the clinical lead for endocrinology and has set up specialist endocrinology clinics in reproductive endocrinology, metabolic bone disease and adrenal disease.

    Dr Ahern has published in peer-reviewed international journals in the diverse areas including reproductive endocrinology and optimisation of service provision and has conducted clinical trials using steroid hormones and incretin therapies.

    Dr Ahern has been seeing and treating patients with gender incongruence in the Louth Hospitals since shortly after commencement of employment there in 2016.

    Dr Ahern began his clinical work with the Gender Plus Hormone Clinic team in Dublin in November 2023. He attends monthly MDT meetings with the his medical and psycho-social colleagues on a monthly basis to review and monitor the holistic care of patients.
